Call for groundwater professionals to lead the Africa Groundwater Network

Apply to join the Steering Committee and drive the African groundwater agenda

The Africa Groundwater Network (AGW-Net), a partner in the Groundwater Solutions Initiative for Policy and Practice (GRIPP), is a continent-wide voluntary network for the African groundwater community with a membership of ~400 professionals. Established in 2008, AGW-Net is under the umbrella of Cap-Net/United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The Steering Committee of AGW-Net, comprising members from every geographic region of Africa, is looking to bring in new and qualified talent to strengthen its membership.

If you are qualified, motivated and ready to contribute to the development, management and protection of Africa’s groundwater resources, you are invited to apply to join the AGW-Net Steering Committee. This is a great opportunity for those with energy, vision and commitment to Africa’s development.

AGW-Net key focus areas

Capacity Development

Development and delivery of short courses (both online and face-to-face), e.g., Groundwater Management / Drilling Supervision / Integration of Groundwater Management in Transboundary River Basin Organizations / Urban Groundwater Management.

Information Sharing and Advocacy

Via capacity development programs, the AGW-Net website (www.agw-net.org) and newsletters (French and English):

  1. Contribute towards the development of a code of practice for professionalism for the African groundwater community and a common goal of sustainable use and protection of groundwater
  2. Solicit information sharing from our membership continent-wide
  3. Provide a resource base for groundwater professionals
  4. Connect groundwater professionals
  5. Advocate for an enhanced community of practice, professionalism and better groundwater management across Africa

Networking and Strengthening Partnerships

  1. Enhance collaboration with national, continental and international organizations
  2. AGW-Net has links with the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), Southern African Development Community – Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI), Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN), International Capacity Development Network for Sustainable Water Management – United Nations Development Programme (CapNet-UNDP), Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), British Geological Survey (BGS), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), WaterNet, River Basin Organizations, etc. These links can be strengthened and some need revitalization
  3. Develop, share and enable new ideas, visions and strategies

 

AGW-Net Structure and Governance

Governance of the network is composed of the following:

  • A Steering Committee of 10 people elected by the membership. Members of the current Steering Committee are from various countries: Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe
  • Network Manager: The current position holder is Dr. Moustapha Diene from Senegal.

 

Requirements to apply to join the Steering Committee

  1. A groundwater professional with a minimum of 5 years of experience, preferably working in Africa
  2. A member of AGW-Net
  3. Motivated to serve the community of groundwater professionals and users in Africa

 

How to submit an expression of interest

If you meet the above requirements and are interested in being a member of the AGW-Net Steering Committee, send your application to Dr. Moustapha Diene (moudien@gmail.com) by December 31, 2021. The application should include a letter expressing your interest, motivation and curriculum vitae. We encourage women and young professionals to apply.

The Steering Committee will evaluate all the applications received and hold an election for new members. Feedback will be provided to all applicants by January 31, 2022.

Le Réseau Afrique des Eaux Souterraines (AGW-Net), partenaire de la Groundwater Solutions Initiative for Policy and Practice (GRIPP), est un réseau à l’échelle continentale basé sur le volontariat, pour la communauté des professionnels des eaux souterraines en Afrique, avec un effectif de près de 400 membres. AGW-Net a été créé en 2008, sous l’égide de Cap-Net/PNUD.

Le Comité de pilotage d’AGW-Net comprend des membres de toutes les régions géographiques d’Afrique, et il cherche à attirer des talents nouveaux et novateurs pour renforcer la composition du Comité de pilotage.

Si vous êtes qualifié, motivé et prêt à contribuer à la gestion, au développement et à la protection des ressources en eau souterraine en Afrique, vous êtes invité à présenter votre candidature pour rejoindre le Comité de pilotage. Principaux domaines d’intervention d’AGW-Net

Renforcement des capacités

Réalisation et organisation de formations de courte durée, en ligne et en présentiel, par exemple : Gestion des eaux souterraines / Supervision des forages / Intégration de la gestion des eaux souterraines dans les organismes de bassin transfrontaliers / Gestion des eaux souterraines urbaines.

Partage d’informations et plaidoyer

A travers les programmes de renforcement des capacités et le site web AGW-Net : www.agw-net.org et les bulletins d’information (français et anglais) :

  1. Contribuer au développement d’un code de pratique pour le professionnalisme de la communauté africaine travaillant dans le domaine des eaux souterraines et pour un objectif commun d’utilisation durable et de protection des eaux souterraines.
  2. Encourager le partage d’informations de nos membres à l’échelle du continent.
  3. Fournir une base de références pour les professionnels des eaux souterraines
  4. Mettre en réseau les professionnels de l’eau souterraine
  5. Faire un plaidoyer pour une de pratique professionnelle renforcée, un professionnalisme et une meilleure gestion des eaux souterraines en Afrique.

Mise en réseau et renforcement des partenariats

  1. Renforcer la collaboration avec les organisations nationales, continentales et internationales.
  2. AGW-Net a des liens avec : AMCOW, IAH, SADC-GMI, RWSN, CapNet-PNUD, BGR, BGS, IWMI, WaterNet, des organismes de bassin, etc. Ces liens peuvent être renforcés et certains ont besoin d’être revitalisés.
  3. Développer, partager et faciliter de nouvelles idées, visions et stratégies.

 

Structure et gouvernance d’AGW-Net

La gouvernance du réseau est composée des organes suivants:

  • Un Comité de pilotage de 10 personnalités élues par les membres. Les membres actuels du comité viennent de différents pays, à savoir l’Afrique du Sud, l’Égypte, l’Éthiopie, le Ghana, le Nigeria, le Sénégal, l’Ouganda, la Zambie et le Zimbabwe.
  • Un gestionnaire de réseau: Le titulaire actuel du poste est le Dr. Moustapha Diene du Sénégal.

 

Conditions à remplir pour rejoindre le comité de pilotage

  1. Être un professionnel de l’eau souterraine avec un minimum de 5 ans d’expérience, travaillant de préférence en Afrique.
  2. Être membre d’AGW-Net.
  3. Être motivé pour servir la communauté des professionnels et des utilisateurs des eaux souterraines en Afrique.
